The Holy Qur’an with A Geometrical
Motive in the Malay Peninsula
n the world of Malay Manuscript, copies of The Holy Qur’an have their own set of arts and designs involved; which are
classified by experts into a few main categories based on their characteristics. Some are shaped like coils or flowers or
Ifree-styled designs, or even geometrical with each their influences of either local arts or foreign. One such copy is The
Holy Qur’an Manuscript believed to be written around the 19th Century, specifically 1877. This copy belonging to Md.
Noordin Merican, shows a simple yet attractive geometrical design with bright colours; an indication to Indian influence
especially based on its shade of turmeric-like yellow. Another interesting characteristic is its flower petal arches that
surrounds its frame where it is given a second layer with contrasting colours. Clearly showing its Indian heritage, similar
designs could be found in Jamek Mosques or the Indian Mosques around Malaya, such as those in Kuala Lumpur and
Penang. It was initially given to the Museum of Penang and later gifted to Merican’s son-in-law Hashim Yahya Merican;
and later on to his daughter then to Che Ahmad Nachar (a.k.a Ma’ Wan), Haji Fathil’s mother-in-law. Such a treasure is
hoped to be preserved and cherish for the appreciation and study for future generations.
