Student Development and Counselling unit :

The team is committed in providing comprehensive counselling services for student's development, personal growth and self-awareness in order to empowering them to take full advantage of their experiences while study at Universiti Islam Malaysia.

We aim to fulfil students’ psychological needs in their academic endeavour by assuring their competencies during industrial training. Hence to achieve this, we will provide varieties of counselling services.

Privacy and confidentiality is our main priority. The counselling sessions will be carried out in a comfortable, safe and non-threatening environment. During the sessions, students will be guided to explore their issues, express their feelings, reflect on their behaviour, and achieve self-understanding. At the end of the sessions, we will guide the students to make decision, which will lead to positive change. Here are the counselling services that we will provide in our university:

Individual Counselling
Students will come to consult their counsellor willingly. The consultation will be treated as confidential. The session will allows students to explore their feelings, beliefs, and behaviours, work through challenging or influential memories, identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change, better understand of themselves, set personal goals, and work toward desired change.
Group Counselling
Group meeting is a great way to engage other students who can relate to one another. Students will find peer support and gaining strength as they share their feelings, issues and experiences with other students who are facing the same dilemmas. They will discuss the potential alternatives to overcome the issues with the supervision from the counsellor.
Referral Counselling
Apart from volunteering themselves to the counsellor, students may be referred by their faculties to participate in the counselling sessions. The referral may be made either because the student’s problems are interfering with his or her academic work or the students’ behaviour has raises concerns.

There are students who opposed to the idea of getting counsel or help. But getting help is important for them to overcome their dilemmas.
Psychological Assessment
Individual’s stress, interest, personality, emotional level, attitude and achievement will be identified by using instruments for example Depression Anxiety Stress Survey (DASS) to get valid result. Students who are experiencing difficulty in academic, for example, will be tested with learning disabilities test. Another example is the test for measuring skills such as dexterity, reaction time and memory can help students to find solutions to overcome their issues.
